Last night I went to see the wonderful Memphis the musical! To be honest, I had no expectations going into the show as for once, I had no idea what the show was about nor I had heard the music before. I love Broadway but this was one show I, obviously, didn’t know much about. My best friend and I did a little investigative work beforehand while we were eating at the Melting Pot and found that it won the Tony Award for Best Musical in 2010. Therefore we had an inkling that it was going to be good.
Let me tell you – I was BLOWN away! The cast was so awesome! Awesome is an understatement – really. Are you like me and have no clue what the show is about? I’ll give you a small hint, it was about the city of Memphis. Ha. Not enough? Okay, let me tell you more.
Memphis the musical takes place in the city of Memphis in the 1950s in smoky halls and underground clubs during a segregated time. A young white DJ name Huey Calhoun fell in love with everything he shouldn’t: rock and roll and an electrifying black singer. Memphis is an original story about the cultural revolution that erupted when his vision met her voice and the music changed forever.
There is so much good music and beautiful moments. I can’t state it enough – the cast was wonderful. Go see it if you can! It’s here in Atlanta until February 5th. If you miss it here, it’s going to be touring the United States, so look it up!
