Before I really dive into it, I want to just remind you that I have been adding lots of great local Atlanta events to our Events Calendar here on Today’s Mama. Be sure to check it out from time to time and see what’s going on in your neck of the woods. If I get a press release about a local event, I always make sure to get it posted for you all.
When a baby is born prematurely, that child will need special care that can only be provided by the NICU (neonatal intensive care unit). One local hospital, Piedmont Fayette Hospital, has recently filed a petition with the State of Georgia that would allow them to expand their NICU.
Currently, Piedmont has five NICU beds and they are already starting to exceed capacity. They are wanting to add five more beds and hoping to establish a Level III NICU so that they can provide a higher level of care closer to home. Currently, premature babies that need this type of care currently have to be transferred to other hospitals, requiring their families to drive long distances to be with them.
The reason they’ve asked for our help is because another hospital is opposing their application to expand. They are asking that anyone who wishes to help simply sign their online petition found at http://keepbabiesinfayette.org/ and let their voice be heard!
I’ve signed the petition. I would urge you to do the same if you feel so inclined.
